A parallel track to the conference will take place in Second Life (SL), the Virtual World, between 00.00 and 05.00 26th June (Second Life Time; for start time in RL around the world go to http://tinyurl.com/6oo4n3), with interaction between the Real Life (RL) and SL conferences. Registration is required for this free event, which will take place on Infolit iSchool. You will need a SL avatar and the skills to move around and communicate in SL.

The focus is exploring the nature of Inquiry Based Learning (IBL), and its use in teaching in both RL and SL. The conference is aimed at anyone who wants to discuss the potential of IBL, learn more about it and/ or exchange experience: you may be using IBL already (whether in RL teaching or SL teaching) or just be thinking about using it.

IBL is a term used to describe approaches to learning that are based on a process of self-directed inquiry or research. Students conduct small or large-scale inquiries into open-ended questions and problems of their discipline, often in collaboration with others. You can find examples at http://www.shef.ac.uk/cilass/cases/projectlist.html and http://tinyurl.com/4cpkye.

The LTEA2008 in SL conference director is Sheila Webber, Senior Lecturer in Sheffield University’s Department of Information Studies, a Fellow of the Centre for Inquiry-based Learning in the Arts and Social Sciences and a member of the RL conference committee. As Sheila Yoshikawa in SL she has been teaching, and running a discussion series, on Infolit iSchool. Jo Kay, Judy O’Connell, Nick Noakes and Jo Sanchez (Jokay Wollongong, Heyjude Jenns, Corwin Carillon and North Lamar) are kindly providing advice on the final programme.

Programme

00.00 - 01.20 (i.e. starting 8am UK time; 5pm Sydney, Australia time) Inquiry into IBL

LTEA2800 in SL will start by mirroring the exercise that will have been carried out as the opening plenary in the RL conference: participants will share their ideas about IBL and identify questions or issues about IBL that they would like to explore. Photos and text from the RL conference will have been uploaded to the conference wiki (http://networked-inquiry.pbwiki.com/) and SL delegates will be able to respond to these ideas as well as producing their own ideas about IBL and (if they want) 3D representations. The outcomes from this SL session will also be uploaded to the wiki.

01.30-02.20 (i.e starting 9.30am UK time, 6.30pm Sydney time) IBL in SL

The session consists of an interaction between participants in the RL conference and participants in SL.

Delegates at the SL track of LTEA2008 will lead discussion aiming to illuminate the possibilities for Inquiry Based Learning (IBL) in SL. RL delegates will participate via their own avatars or via facilitators and observation of the data screen. Participants may also compare their views of IBL, and reflect on the affordances of the RL and SL conference in developing these views. Lyn Parker (Maggie Kohime in SL) will lead the RL participants.

02.40-04.10 (i.e. starting 10.40am UK time, 7.40pm Sydney) IBL in RL and SL: explorations and examples

There will be a mixture of options:

- Learn about and discuss examples of IBL from poster or presentation sessions

- participating in “unconference” activities session (i.e. IBL activities suggested and led by delegates) proposed in the opening session.

04.15-05.00 (i.e. starting 12.15 UK time, 9.15pm Sydney) IBL: answers and questions

A wrap-up discussion, including identifying any future events or activities focusing on IBL.
